Getting to & from Yangshuo

Time and budget play a major role in your decision on the best way to get to and/or from Yangshuo.

Plane

Guilin International airport is located 28 klms from Guilin and has direct flights to most major destinations in China . It also offers international flights to Hong Kong, Macau, Kuala Lumpur , Bangkok and Seoul .

The opening of a new toll expressway has reduced travel time between Yangshuo and Guilin airport to approximately 50 minutes.

CAAC airport buses depart regularly from just outside the terminal exit door and can drop you off near the train station before arriving at the Civil Aviation Mansion in Guilin . The trip usually takes around 45 minutes.

Taxis are available at Guilin airport, however you will have to bargain very heavily to get a reasonable price. If the driver does not use the new toll expressway the trip will usually take at least 1 and a half hour to get to Yangshuo.

Bus from Guilin :

There are two options for buses from Guilin .

Local buses depart from the train station. Prices vary depending on how well you can bargain and how much luggage you have. Usually the price will be Y10 –Y15. The journey takes approximately one and a half hours, sometimes more depending on traffic. There have been reports of pick-pocketing, bag-slashing and theft on these buses. Some travelers have also experienced being dropped off before the bus station in Yangshuo and being greeted by hotel touts. The last bus departs Guilin around 9pm however this may often be later during peak holiday times.

Express buses depart from the Bus station on Zhongshan Nan road. (approximately 200 metres from the train station – exit station and turn left) Buses have a fixed schedule, depart every 20 minutes from around 7am to 8pm. Tickets cost Y15. Purchase from the ticket office on the left as you enter the station or from inside the main waiting hall. This bus is comfortable with air conditioning and heating. It also offers the added benefit of not stopping along the way. An easy hassle free ride, usually taking around 75 – 90 minutes.

Overnight sleeper buses are available from Shenzhen and Guangzhou . Their services are to Guilin but most will stop in Yangshuo on the way.

Train

The closest train station is Guilin . Trains from most regions of China have services to, from and/or via Guilin .

Boat

Cruises are available daily down the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo.

These trips are popular and receive mixed reviews from travelers. Large boats carrying mainly local tourists generally all depart in a long line and chug noisily along the river for hours. Some days it is not unusual to have 20 or more boats, speakers blaring with local guides bellowing out information (usually in Chinese) for the hundreds of passengers. The foreigner boats stop at the boat docks in the centre of town just a few minutes walk from Yangshuo's Magnolia Hotel.

Sightseeing on the river is certainly recommended however you may find it much more satisfying to have Magnolia Hotel, Yangshuo arrange for a more intimate and peaceful experience by organizing a boat trip of the most spectacular section of river between Yangdi and Xingping.
